Final paper - Essay Example r dehumanisation of the Jews through the environment and the brutal, cold treatment from different groups of people, and though many survivors had the ideology of using one another as means to basic survival, some admirably managed to keep their humanity intact by compartmentalising animal and humane instincts. The book effectively demonstrates that, to win against the Nazis, the Jews did not only fight the daily battles for physical survival in Auschwitz, but, more importantly, they fought the war for the survival of their humanity. The temporal setting reflects the inhumane conditions of the Jews through the Nazis who used the environment to maximise the torture they could inflict on them. The transportation to the camp itself was agonising enough to kill many. Without food, water, warmth, and enough physical space, Levi captures the first stage of the machine of destruction- to die by natural means through unnatural uses of environmental conditions.2 He narrates how, in the trains, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦men, women and children [were] pressed together without pity, like cheap merchandise, for a journey towards nothingness, a journey down there, towards the bottom.â⬠3 The inclusion of women and children in the same circumstances indicated how the Nazis perpetuated anti-Semitic ideology that judged the Jewsââ¬â¢ inferiority as innate, even women and children were not spared. One of the greatest enemies in the Holocaust was not only the Nazis, but the severe environment. Even in summer, Buna was not better, excep t it was not so cold. Levi takes pains depicting Buna as ââ¬Å"desperately and essentially opaque and gray,â⬠a ââ¬Å"negation of beauty,â⬠4 while Carbide Tower was compared to the Tower of Babel because inhabitants had 15 to 20 languages.5 These descriptions prove that the centralised aspect of the annihilation of the Jews included their assignment in unrelenting environments that killed them physically and mentally. Removed from their comfortable civilised stations in life,

Is the capacity to acquire language also available for acquiring an Term Paper
Is the capacity to acquire language also available for acquiring an additional language - Term Paper Example It is more effective in children due to the concept of tabula rasa that portrays the brain as an empty slate of content which can be educated accordingly. Linguistic ability develops uniquely in every child depending on the real circumstances of the situation. It is implied by a number of argumentative theories that putting in place certain considerations such as innateness of a person to language and the extent to which it upholds. Second language acquisition theories Second language acquisition involves a number of ideas both from the theories of nativism by Noam Chomsky to conflicting notions against it. These theories, woven into one aspect of secondary language acquisition, explain need for education in acquiring a second language. It emphasizes that language cannot be achieved without further tutelage. The nativists argue that acquisition of a language is determined by inherent factors of human ability to learn language. These skills are ââ¬Ëprogramedââ¬â¢ and well-struct ured in the minds of human beings before they are born. It implies that we can learn language entirely by ourselves after birth and express ourselves. However, linguistic knowledge requires communion for expression to be meaningful and for communication to be achieved. Need for such supportive factors as other people to converse with in a language beckons ideas of second language acquisition. It requires further that individuals be informed more and educated on language. These factors revolve around a built in ability that human beings gain before birth and that pre-disposes us to language acquisition. Noam Chomsky proposed that this language is achieved by a genetic provision. Every human being therefore is born with an LAD language acquisition device that provides them with knowledge of a language. It is therefore possible for children, according to Noamââ¬â¢s theory, to acquire their native language with ease and without any training. He argues further that second language can be adapted with no difficulty through the same LAD mechanism. The LAD disregards the language to be deciphered and provides comprehension despite the tongue being adapted whether it is English, Chinese or any other known dialect. LAD aids their comprehension and pragmatic interpretation of words they have not heard before. The human capacity to acquire linguistic knowledge as per Noam Chomsky is fervently countered by other theories of acquisition. Such theories emphasize that while an infantââ¬â¢s mind may possess leaning abilities; such ability is developed from the period before its birth by development of its auditoria system. This development allows the child to learn language while they are still unborn. Its brain is therefore as an empty slate in the process of formation that learns and unlearns matters. The brain is dependent on training in order to learn any language and does not depend on a natural device to gain linguistic wisdom. Such arguments persist that Noamââ¬â ¢s nativism is not necessarily wrong but it is obscured by vagueness and assumptions. Thus, the human mind indeed has learning potential but no actual content in it. Any linguistic content or skill obtained is learned in the womb as soon as hearing features begin to develop. The infant is trained by its motherââ¬â¢s own voice and that of the people around him in the period of gestation. Moreover, ability acquired in the womb is barely language itself but hearing skills

The Customer Analysis and Market Segmentation Essay
The Customer Analysis and Market Segmentation - Essay Example The study shows that producers need to create commodities on high demand thus, the need to make potential estimates. While marketing industrial grinding machinery, a marketer will have to make four decisions, which include; the pricing decisions, the product decisions, the placing decisions and the promotion decisions. Under the product decisions, the marketer will first have to decide on the quality, brand name, and functionality of the machinery. Depending on the potential estimates made and the potential customers being targeted, the standards set can be high or low. Marketers need to consider this because for instance; some brand names will appeal to some customers while to others they may not make any sense at all. The pricing decisions are highly critical since they determine the profit-making of the organization. The marketer should ensure that the price set is in accordance with the potential estimates made. Prices should not be exceptionally high since this may cause custome rs to shift to the competitors. In making this decision, marketers should evaluate the prices of other grinders in the market. The marketer also has to decide whether discounts will be issued on the machinery or not (Pride & Ferrell, 2011). Under the placing decisions, the marketer has to decide on the distribution of the grinding machinery. Depending on the potential estimates made concerning the market available, the marketer has to decide which places to distribute the product and which to be left idle. Transportation decisions also have to be considered, and the number of distribution channels. However, most distribution centers should be placed where a wide potential market has been identified. Promotion decisions include the various ways in which the marketer can market the product. Different marketers will use different strategies of marketing a product depending on its type. For instance, marketing grinding machinery would need a method such as personal selling to ensure tha t the customer is totally made aware of the product and its functioning. However, other methods of marketing such as advertising might leave some information about the product. 2) What is the relationship among market segmentation, target marketing, and positioning? What will happen to a companyââ¬â¢s target marketing and positioning efforts if markets are incorrectly or not effectively/insightfully segmented? Market segmentation refers to the division of the customers of a product in different groups. Customers will mainly be divided depending on their needs, their characteristics and their financial ability. While segmenting the market, the marketer also has to consider the organizationââ¬â¢s ability to satisfy all the segments and the competitive advantage of each segment. Other factors that have to be considered in evaluating the segmentation includes; the costs of the product and the sales estimates (Pride & Ferrell, 2011). Once the business has divided its market into di fferent segments, it then evaluates the potential gains of each market and then chooses which to concentrate on. This process is referred to as target marketing. The market chosen is then referred to as the target market.

Critical Book Review Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Critical Book Review - Essay Example CIDA has recently discarded its main advantages, such as gender equality, health issues, importance of development aid etc. Though one can argue that every organization is connected with its self-interest, we can surely claim that further discussion is related to the international aid policies, political and economic contexts. The first chapter "Canada among Donors: How Does Canadian aid Compare?" by Hunter McGill deals with relations of Canada in terms of international society on the matters of help, undertakings and goals. There are two different international processes, which are used for evaluation of international relations in Canada with respect to international policies, non-aid policies and programs. Unfortunately, Canadian government is not interested in foreign help and support and shows underperformance at the international level. This claim is produced by the author of the chapter, but it is interesting for the readers to find out whether it is true or not. On the basis of two basic criteria, such as the Peer Review process of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development Assistance Committee (OECD/DAC) and the Commitment to Development Index annual rankings of the Center for Global Development (CGD) evaluation of international aid in the development of Canada is discussed further on in this chapter. Other donor states evaluate national situation in Canada and in accordance with their data they donate help (McGill). The CGDs Commitment to Development Index was established as part of an effort to rate how the public policies of twenty-two nations, all currently members of the DAC, affect the prospects and progress of developing countries. Basing on these two basic indices, it is possible to evaluate a certain degree of international aid donated to Canada. At the same time, Canada plays a role of an important international donor and it is possible to measure international help donated by the country. Canada has been

Complaint Management in Social Media - A Comparative Linguistic Essay
Complaint Management in Social Media - A Comparative Linguistic analysis between Company Websites and Facebook - Essay Example Research findings indicate that complaints are rarely responded to and usually only where the language used is complimentary to and/or helpful to the firm. Therefore, contrary to Hirschmanââ¬â¢s theory of exit-voice, companies are not taking advantage of defensive marketing tools calculated to retain customers. Social media is defined as any online forum or site on which users may exchange information, opinions or knowledge. In other words the term social media refers to websites in which users are able to freely post to those websites. Brunty and Helenek define social media as a ââ¬Å"social mediumâ⬠which facilitates communications between users and communications between users and those who created or manage the website or page. Social media also includes a forum in which users can exchange content. Social media websites provide a variety of ways for users to communicate and include email, message boards, instant messaging, video or audio chatting. The idea is to provide a ââ¬Å"sense of community among usersâ⬠. ... In this regard, businesses are looking at various ways in which they can benefit from social media via social networking tools such as YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.3 Businesses are now entering unchartered territories in that they can now engage consumer-to-consumer discussions through various online social networking strategies. These communications are uncensored for the most part and permit the consumers to speak to one another freely about businesses and their products. Social media also provides a platform for consumers to speak directly to business management.4 From the perspective of business, the ââ¬Å"quality of user-general contentâ⬠can range from ââ¬Å"excellent to abuse and spam.â⬠5 Previously, consumers merely went online to explore content and information relative to a business and its products and/or services. Increasingly, consumers are adding their own content to a companyââ¬â¢s profile, blogs or websites.6 Thus social media has the capacity to impac t a businessââ¬â¢s reputation, sales and might even impact its success.7 This is all the more important because social media tools are increasing alongside internet users who are gathering at social network sites. For example a Pew Report demonstrates that young adults in the US between the ages of 18 and 29 have increased the use of social networks online via cellular telephones. Between 2006 and 2008 online social networking via cellular telephones, among young adults in the US increased by 10% (from 55% to 65%).8 Overall, access points to social networking via the internet have increased exponentially over the years. Globally, users engaged in social networking increased from 54% to 77% by
